Historic Sites
The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and National World War II Memorial are located in the large, open park area of the National Mall. The National Archives Building, located north of the Mall, houses thousands of documents important to American history including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
Museums and Galleries
Also located on the National Mall are the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of African Art, and the National Museum of American History.
The National Gallery of Art, which includes the collection of American and European art through the 19th century and works of modern art; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the largest private museum in D.C.; and the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle, the first museum of modern art in the U.S., are all housed in D.C.
Performing Arts and Music
D.C. is a national center for the arts, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts—home to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington National Opera, and the Washington Ballet.
